Dan Nelken’s new photobook is a compelling collection of portraits celebrating women of Northern Uganda working hard to provide for their families. Most of the sitters for this graceful series have lived a harsh life affected by the civil war, subsequent insurgencies, and struggling economy.
Some of the women were abducted by insurgents when they were kids or were internally displaced because of the hostilities. Many had to drop out of school and started to work at a young age. Most are mothers toiling to buy food and clothes for their children, and pay school fees. But none abandon hope for a brighter future.
