Mark Alice Durant makes a point of noting that his new book is neither a sociological study nor a manifesto. Still, Confessions of a Working Class Artist is quite a lot of things, including an autobiography, a celebration of art in general and photography in particular, and even a collection of advice (sort of) for aspiring creatives, interspersed with aphoristic commentary on life as an artist of humble origins.

Confessions is written in an episodic style, mixing personal anecdotes of shame and revelation, sociopolitical observations, and stories from fellow working-class artists. Durant also writes about some of the biggest influences on his artistic (and political) views, from the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke to the French painter Gustave Caillebotte to the American filmmaker Maya Deren.

This new photobook is a collection of uncompromising portraits of 27 individuals (including Brune herself), whose bodies fall outside of the so-called conventional beauty standards. For UNCOOL, Brune took pictures of and interviewed fellow wheelchair users, as well as amputees, cancer survivors, persons with Down syndrome, hearing loss, or vision impairment — and other conditions that society still often labels as disabilities and disorders.UNCOOL is the product of her four-year-long project that began in 2022 and has since been nominated for several prestigious prizes. In 2026, Brune was shortlisted for the C/O Berlin Talent Award and selected as a finalist for the Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award at Rencontres d'Arles, where her work was part of a group exhibition at LUMA Arles.

Some of the women were abducted by insurgents when they were kids or were internally displaced because of the hostilities. Many had to drop out of school and started to work at a young age. Most are mothers toiling to buy food and clothes for their children, and pay school fees. But none abandon hope for a brighter future.

Part of a bigger journey of liberation through self-exploration, this new photobook by Jo Ann Chaus is above all a collection of self-portraits, complemented by landscapes, still lifes and domestic interiors observed and inhabited by the photographer-cum-model.
 

With the women of the 1950s as her role models, and influenced by the New Color Photography movement and her background in fashion, Chaus employs dramatic colors and lighting to photograph herself — occasionally undressed but more often fancily clad in bright dresses of the era, exhibiting both strength and vulnerability.
